World Music Album Reviews1 Real : DJ Dolores
The breadth of musical influences is quite diverse with his samples crossing a number of musical boundaries - in Proletariado I'm sure I heard violin riffs from a Scandanavian album I own - while Flying Horse has some great twangy surfy guitar. This is not at all surprising seeing as Helder Aragáo (his real name) has worked with people like Beastie Boys and David Byrne and remixed a number bands such as Taraf de Haïdouks. With half the album being laid back grooves and the other half slightly faster dance tracks 1 Real is works just as well as a dance album as something to listen to without ever being in your face. DJ Dolores is at the forefront of a new movement which seeks to take back some of the Brazil's neglected traditions, especially those styles traditionally shunned by "the establishment" and bring them to a wider audience in an effort bridge the gap between rich and poor, young and old. This is evidenced in many of the pieces which make a social comment of some kind. Tocando o Terror deals with blonde-haired, tattooed women who hang around the beach relishing in their ability to provoke a sexual reaction from men while Proletariado talks about the violence being related to the lack of opportunities for youth - in all countries, not just Brazil. For those who are fans of dub music with an intellectual twist, I'd recommend you give 1 Real a listen today! > Find out more about DJ Dolores' 1 Real and other great world music artists at Crammed Discs |
