The Year of the Rat starts on Thursday, February 7, and WNYC will ring
it in starting midnight with The New Moon Rises: A Lunar New Year Music
Festival, a presentation of traditional, contemporary, classical and
pop Asian and Asian-influenced music.
An exceptional opportunity to learn about seldom-heard instruments,
artists, and arrangements (at least in this hemisphere), spanning centuries
of musical history to today, WNYC’s Lunar New Year Festival will
offer music from Tibet, Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and China over four
days of new, recent and archival programming on WNYC2, available at www.wnyc.org.
WNYC2 kicks of the festival at 12am on February 7 with 24 hours of uninterrupted
music from the celebrating nations. The party continues with two hour
blocks of programming on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, individually spotlighting
each nation with music and commentary.
